On July 8, 2023, the UC College of Hospitality and Tourism Management (CHTM) held the Rainbow Funathon 2023 at Burnham Park’s Athletic Bowl. Inspired by the rainbow as a symbol of hope, unity, and promise, the event brought together students and community members for a morning of fitness, camaraderie, and positive reflection. Organized by THM 115 HRA 2A students, with support from HRA 2B and the CHTM College Student Council, the event allowed participants to enjoy the colors of diversity while engaging in physical wellness activities. With over a month of preparation, the students took charge of the entire event process—from securing permits and designing promotional materials to handling logistics and coordinating with various campus groups.
The event kicked off at 5 a.m., beginning with warm-up exercises led by the College of Teacher Education. Runners in the 10K, 5K, and 3K categories took to the route winding through Burnham Park, Kisad Road, Military Cut-off, and Loakan Road, with staggered starts to manage flow. Safety and medical teams, supported by the College of Criminal Justice Education and the College of Nursing, ensured that all participants were well-protected along the course.
The finish line brought moments of celebration as the top three runners in each category claimed their victories: 3K category: Champion – Ritchie Estampador, 2nd – Hussein Lorana, 3rd – Roy Laudit; 5K category: Champion – Junel Gobotia, 2nd – James Darrel Orouna, 3rd – Dhen AJ Monton; and 10K category: Champion – Richard Salano, 2nd – Kevin James Cruz, 3rd – Jackson Chirchir. Post-race activities included a lively Zumba session led by the College of Teacher Education, followed by a cool-down and awards ceremony.
This practical application of event management was a core aspect of the THM 115 course, where students utilized theoretical concepts to plan and execute a large-scale event. Working alongside the College of Nursing, College of Criminal Justice Education, and other UC organizations, the students gained real-world experience in logistics, participant engagement, and financial management, while developing their teamwork and problem-solving skills.
The event culminated with closing remarks by Dean Michelle Mamaril, recognizing the hard work and enthusiasm of all involved. The Rainbow Funathon 2023 stands as a testament to UC CHTM’s commitment to fostering unity, purpose, and hope, reflecting the rainbow’s promise of positivity and inclusivity.
